Human Rights in Kashmir
“The suggestion that human rights violations are permissible in certain circumstances is wrong. The essence of human rights is that human life and dignity must not be compromised and that certain acts, whether carried out by the state or non-state actors are never justified no matter what the ends. International human rights and humanitarian law define the boundaries of permissible political and military conduct.”
United Nations High Commission for Human Rights
In March 1989 the Indian military might with guns and missiles, came out in the streets of Jammu & Kashmir in response to a peaceful uprising for self-determination. The panorama of gross abuse was heralded and it continues to this day. Censures on the Indian government have consistently come from the international community and Indian Intellectuals; but unfortunately human rights violations have simply increased in intensity and frequency.
Categories of Human Rights Violations include:
1. Denial of freedom of speech.
2. Denial of holding peaceful demonstrations.
3. Torture and degrading treatment.
4. Extrajudicial, summary and arbitrary executions.
5. Disappearances.
6. Torture of Children.
7. Sexual assault on women.
8. Denial of right to fair trial.
9. Arbitrary detention.
